WHAT WILL THE ANSWERS TO THE BIG QUESTIONS BE?

I hope I’m a better bowler than I am a weather forecaster! Last month I referred to the snow having cleared. But no sooner had I despatched that article than the snow returned and we lost another week of preparing the green. However, by the time you read this, Margaret Turner, President of our Ladies Section will have rolled the first bowl on our Opening Day on what (despite the adverse weather) looks a luscious green. And so our season will be underway. No wonder the Club is buzzing!

Next month I’ll be able to report on our opening Water of Leith fixture against local rivals Juniper Green BC (to be followed shortly thereafter by a game against our other local adversaries, Currie BC ). What a great way to start the season!

But it will be some time before we know the answers to the big questions about our forthcoming season viz.

q  Will Maxie Baigrie successfully defend his Men’s Champions title to become a three times winner?

q  Will Helen Girdler make history by winning the Ladies Championship for a record breaking seventh time?

q  Will Frank Millan still be telling everyone he is the Senior Champion this time next year?

q  Will the ‘young bloods’ in the Club fulfil their potential by picking up the major trophies or will they be put in the shade by Simon Mackay in his 87th (or is it 88th?) year?

q  Will the Balerno BC Teams in the Water of Leith Leagues overcome all the odds and reach the upper half of the league tables?

q  Will a Balerno BC Team prove to be the Ross County of bowls and get to a cup final?

q  Will my blood pressure stay low enough with all this excitement to let me see out the season?

Whatever the answers to those questions may be, I’m sure everyone in the Club will have terrific fun as they ‘lock horns’ with friends old and new within and outwith the Club. Good luck to them all!

Meanwhile our Social events continue apace. After a ‘full house’ at our end month cabaret show in March for the thoroughly entertaining ‘Mr Vegas’, members and guests are looking forward to the return of the fabulous group ‘Athens’ at end April. And I’m sure those of our regular crowd who, because of the weather, missed seeing the Duncan McCrone Band (one of the best folk groups ever to perform at Balerno) will be out in force in April for Wendy Arrowsmith.

But back to the serious business ……where did I put the polish for my bowls?
